Sugar Could Be Messing With Your Mood

We know some foods affect our moods and one of the worst offenders is sugar. But even when you’re staying away from desserts, the sweet stuff is hiding in all kinds of other foods we think of as healthy, like yogurt and juice, so you really have to read labels carefully to avoid sugar altogether.

When we eat sugar, the body counteracts by releasing insulin and that leads to a drop in blood glucose. And that causes the body to compensate by releasing adrenaline, which leaves us in a “fight or flight” state and that can lead to anxiety. So the smile that brownie sundae puts on your face could be short lived.

And when you finally decide to kick the sugar habit, it’s not easy. Sugar is super addictive, some experts even compare it to cocaine because you get that “high” to start off with and then you come down. They say it takes about 48 hours to get through sugar cravings, and during the withdrawal you could have headaches or mood swings.

But if you want to boost your mood, giving up the sweet stuff could be the answer. Just remember that if you do a sugar detox, you’ll probably feel worse before you feel better. But when it’s all said and done, you’ll be healthier and happier.
